Educated at Rugby, Baring in 1882 became senior partner of the family banking firm of Baring Brothers and Co until forced to step down following the Panic of 1890. He was also a Director of the Bank of England (1879-1891), chairman of Lloyds (1887-1892) and a Lieutenant of the City of London. In 1885 he was raised to the peerage as Baron Revelstoke, of Membland in the County of Devon. The town of Revelstoke in British Columbia, Canada was renamed in his honour, commemorating his role in securing the financing necessary for completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway....... £30.00

Lord Bessborough played cricket for both Harrow School and Cambridge University Cricket Club, batting right-handed. Ponsonby was an active player until about 1845, when, due to an arm injury, he continued to play only sporadically. He was a founder of Surrey County Cricket Club and its first vice-president. He was also a founder of the I Zingari nomadic amateur cricket club, and of the Old Stagers amateur theatre company.......

As an active Zionist and close friend of Chaim Weizmann, he worked to formulate the draft declaration for a Jewish homeland in Palestine. On 2 November 1917 he received a letter from the British foreign secretary, Arthur Balfour, addressed to his London home at 148 Piccadilly. In this letter the British government declared its support for the establishment in Palestine of "a national home for the Jewish people". Oscar Browning (1837 -1923) was an English writer, historian, and educational reformer. His greatest achievement was the cofounding, along with Henry Sidgwick, of the Cambridge University Day Training College in 1891. This was one of the earliest institutions in Great Britain to focus on the training of educators, preempted only by the founding of the Cambridge Teaching College for Women by Elizabeth Hughes in 1885. He was dismissed in the autumn of 1875 following a major homosexual scandal involving several of his pupils at Eton. His parents' church, St. Andrew's, in Clewer, describes the reasons for his dismissal as "his injudicious talk, his favourites, and his anarchic spirit...... £25.00

Charles Floquet made his name by his brilliant and fearless attacks on the French government in a series of political trials, and at the same time contributed to the Temps and other influential journals. When the tsar Alexander II visited the Palais de Justice in 1867, Floquet was said to have confronted him with the cry "Vive la Pologne, monsieur!" He delivered a scathing indictment of the Empire at the trial of Pierre Bonaparte for killing Victor Noir in 1870, and took a part in the revolution of 4 September as well as in the subsequent defense of Paris....... £25.00

Caption 'Macclesfield".. ...Bromley-Davenport was elected Member of Parliament for Macclesfield in the July 1886 general election. While an MP, he fought in the Second Boer War in the Imperial Yeomanry,where he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) in November 1900. At the end of 1901, he was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Cheshire. He served in the Conservative administration of Arthur Balfour as Financial Secretary to the War Office from 1903 to 1905 and was a Civil Member of the Army Council from 1904 to 1905. However, he lost his seat in the House of Commons in the 1906 Liberal landslide.......

... Edward Miall (1809 -1881) was an English journalist, apostle of disestablishment, founder of the Liberation Society, and Liberal Party politician. In, 1841 he founded The Nonconformist, a weekly newspaper in which he advocated the cause of disestablishment. Miall saw that if the programme of Nonconformity was to be carried through it must have more effective representation in Parliament. One of the first fruits of his work was the entrance of John Bright into parliamentary life; and by 1852 forty Dissenters were members of the House of Commons. .....£40.00

His principal aim was to abolish the Maynooth Grant, claiming that Britain was paying for the creation of priests. His three motions for the creation of a committee to consider repeal of the grant were all defeated in 1861, 1862, and 1863, and he experienced difficulty in getting his anti-Catholic speeches heard due to opposition from the numerous Irish MPs..... £30.00

Ball was born in Hoylake, Merseyside. His father was the prosperous owner of the Royal Hotel, located near the Royal Liverpool Golf Club. After winning The Amateur Championship in 1888, Ball became the first English-born player to win The Open Championship in 1890, and in the same year won his second Amateur, the first to win both titles in the same year. Ball subsequently won the 1892, 1894, 1899, 1907, 1910, and 1912 Amateurs, a record eight titles in all, in addition to two runner-up finishes. Ball retired with a 99-22 record (81.8%) at the The Amateur Championship. Ball was also runner-up in the 1892 Open........£130.00

He founded The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation which was the founder member of HSBC Group and directed the P&O Company. Sutherland was the son of Robert Sutherland of Aberdeen. He was educated at Aberdeen University. He became the Hong Kong superintendent for the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O), and in 1863, he became the first chairman of the Hong Kong and Whampoa Dock. In 1865 he established The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation in Hong Kong and became its first vice-chairman. He was a member of the legislative council for Hong Kong. When the Liberals came to power under William Ewart Gladstone in February 1886, Heneage was appointed Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Vice-President of the Committee of Agriculture and sworn of the Privy Council. However, resigned these offices already in April after disagreeing with Gladstone over Irish Home Rule. He joined the Liberal Unionist Party the same year......

He became president of the Shire Horse Society, of the Hackney Horse Society, and of the Hunters Improvement Society, and he was the founder and chairman of the London Cart Horse Parade Society. He was also a practical agriculturist, and president of the Royal Agricultural Society. He was appointed a deputy lieutenant of Essex in 1906.....

Davidson served as chaplain to Archibald Campbell Tait when Tait was Archbishop of Canterbury and married Tait's daughter. After Tait's death he remained at Lambeth Palace as Chaplain to Edward White Benson when he became Archbishop of Canterbury. A favourite of Queen Victoria, he was appointed Dean of Windsor at a very young age. He was subsequently Bishop of Rochester between 1891 and 1895 and Bishop of Winchester between 1895 and 1903 before becoming Archbishop of Canterbury in 1903. He played a major part in the funeral ceremonies for Queen Victoria in 1901, taking care, along with Dr. James Reid, of the wake at Osborne House, Isle of Wight. Rodger Lloyd, Church of England historian, thought that Davidson was one of the two or three greatest Archbishops of Canterbury. He was the first Archbishop of Canterbury to retire, all his predecessors having died in office... £20.00

He also toured India with George Vernon in 1889, though this tour did not include any Tests. Philipson went to Eton and had a good record as a schoolboy cricketer, before going to Oxford, where he got his blue and where he became captain in 1889. He also represented Oxford at tennis, rackets and Association football. His highest first-class innings was his 150 for the University against Middlesex in 1887, and in this year he was selected to play for the Gentlemen at both Lord's and the Oval.

He served under Lord Salisbury and Arthur Balfour as Under-Secretary of State for India between 1900 and 1902 and under Balfour as Under-Secretary of State for War between 1902 and 1903. He made his last speech in the House of Lords in August 1904, three months before his premature death. Apart from his career in national politics he was a member of the Marylebone City Council between 1897 and 1901 and a Deputy Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire.

Despite never becoming Prime Minister, he is regarded as one of the most important British politicians of the late 19th century and early 20th century, as well as a colourful character and renowned orator.

He was born at Burnham in Norfolk, the son of the vicar of the parish. He was educated at Eton College and King's College, Cambridge and in 1814 was appointed assistant master at Eton under Dr John Keate. In 1834 he became headmaster of Eton, which role he performed until 1853, when he was elected Provost of Eton following the death of Francis Hodgson. Under his administration, new buildings were erected, including the school library and the sanatorium, the college chapel was restored, the Old Christopher Inn was closed, and the custom of Montem, the collection by street begging of funds for the university expenses of the captain of the school, was suppressed. An all-round sportsman and a very fine and amusing after dinner speaker. £25.00

Captain Charles Cunningham Boycott was a British land agent whose ostracism by his local community in Ireland as part of a campaign for workers' rights in 1880 gave the English language the verb to boycott, meaning "to ostracise" .In 1880, as part of its campaign for the "Three Fs" (fair rent, fixity of tenure and free sale) to protect Irish tenants from exploitation, the Irish Land League under Michael Davitt withdrew the local labour required to save the harvest on Lord Erne's estate. When Boycott tried to undermine the campaign, the League launched a campaign of isolation against him in the local community. Neighbours would not talk to him. Shops would not serve him. Local labourers refused to tend his house, and the postman refused to deliver his mail.

On 1st July 1879 at Ulundi, Zululand, during the retirement of the reconnoitering party Captain Lord William Beresford went to the assistance of an NCO of the 24th Regiment, whose horse had fallen and rolled on him. The Zulus were coming in great numbers, but Lord William, with help from a sergeant managed to mount the injured man behind him. He was, however, so dizzy that the sergeant, who had been keeping back the advancing Zulus, gave up his carbine and, riding alongside, helped to hold him on. They all finally reached safety.
